Annapurna Sanctuary Trek -16 days
Annapurna Sanctuary, an appropriate name, since it is considered sacred by the Gurungs (one of the ethnic groups of people in Nepal) who live nearby, has become one of the world's popular trekking destinations. Since 1978 the Sanctuary has become a major destination among the trekking groups, and has gained much popularity. Outstanding high mountain views can be observed during trekking, with the contrasts of lowland rice paddies, gloomy jungles of bamboo and dazzling snow peaks adding much to the broad range of experience. The outlines of the sanctuary are seen from Pokhara. North of the lake of Phew Tal the mountains glow in the morning, a perfect snow-bound horizon whose dominant feature is the pinnacle of Machhapuchare. And along the trail to it this graceful virgin summit appears and reappears with teasing familiarity, soaring beyond the rice paddies, hovering over thatched villages signaling above the deep, dark gorge. On this trek there are numerous lodges and tea- houses available along the trail, so it's perfectly feasible to travel light and rely on food and accommodation at the end of every stage.

Day 01: Kathmandu to Chitwan

- What is Tea house Trek
On the more popular trekking regions like Everest, Langtang and the entire Annapurna regions in Nepal, teahouse lodges are readily available for overnight accommodation and meals for trekkers. Some of the lodges are quite basic particularly in the smaller villages and some run to high level of service with good facilities. These tea houses are run by friendly local families. Tea house treks are less expensive than camping treks and are largely suitable for small groups. Usually during busy seasons if private rooms are fully occupied then dormitory rooms are available. The bedrooms are usually small, the shared bathroom facilities are often outside and meals are served in a dining- hall.
- What is Full Board Camping Trek
Full Board Camping Trek is fully organized and supported by a complete team consisting of guides, cooks, and porters on the trekking trip. Sometime Yaks, horses or mules are also used for carrying luggage and camping gear. Our staff set up tents for dinning and sleeping at night. We provide dining tables, chairs, tents, toilet tent, mattresses and other necessary gear. Food served on the camping trek will be a mix of Western and Asian dishes with variety of choice. . In the camping trek, we start the day around 6 a.m. with a cup of hot tea. After tea you are given a bowl of warm water for light washing. When the washing is finished, trekkers do packing of their belongings and make duffle bag ready to hand over to the porter. After the packing, breakfast is served around 7 to 7:30 a.m and trekkers can enjoy breakfast with hot tea, milk, coffee etc before leaving camp. The walk begins around 8:00 a.m. Trekkers can set their own pace while walking. The walk to the lunch spot will normally take 3 to 4 hours. A hot and delicious meals prepared by our expert cook is served for lunch along with hot juice and tea. The afternoon walk usually takes 2 to 3 hours. After arriving at the campsite, tea and snacks are served while our staff set up the tents. Dinner is served around 6:00 – 7:00 p.m in the dinning tent. After dinner our guide briefs about the next day program and any questions from any of you can be discussed .At the end, they take leave from you saying good night and have a good sleep!
- When to Go Trek in Nepal ?
The most ideal time for Nepal trekking is during spring and autumn. However, the climate is not as consistent as anyone would expect. It varies depending on the season. During autumn, trekkers enjoy sunny blue skies and warm temperature during night. Autumn starts in the first few weeks of September to December. On the other hand, spring begins at the first week of March and lasts until the last week of May. Sometimes rainfalls unexpectedly even during the spring season.
Spring (March - May)
This is the one of the other best times for trekking in Nepal, offering different varieties of wild flowers, specially rhododendrons making the hillside above 3000 meters a hunting paradise during this Spring. It is mildly warm at lower elevations and at higher elevation, over 4000m the Mountain Views are excellent while the temperature is quite moderate.
Summer/Monsoon (June - August)
Summer months continue up to mid September making travel wet and warm. These times are a blessing for the keen botanist or photographer as the higher valleys and meadows blossom with flowers and lush vegetation making this the perfect time to capture Nepal in all its beauty. Autumn (September - November)
This season is considered the best time for trekking in Nepal, which offers excellent weather and tantalizing mountain views. Temperatures are moderate, making it a good time for any one of our trekking options. The skies are generally clear with outstanding views. Occasional short storms may dump snow at high altitudes.
Winter (December - February)
This season is noted for occasional snowfall only at higher elevations. Hence it is ideal for trekking at lower elevation, generally below 3500 meters. Click here for winter trekking options.
- Nepal Trek Grades
All treks in Nepal are given a trekking grade. This is a guide referring to the difficulty and the fitness you may require. It means interpretation & description of the routes based on duration of trek, altitude, remoteness, trail condition, weather & other factors. We cannot say precisely how difficult or easy a walk could be in the mountain. It depends on the age, fitness, ability to walk from person to person.
A trek with an easy grade is suitable for all levels of fitness and age groups. It is ideal for couples travelling with young children. The trails will be easy without any excessive long up hills or step gradients. An easy trek is normally at lower altitudes and in milder weather so less equipment is used. These treks are normally within easy access of roads and main towns in case of emergency. On an easy trek a day’s walking is rarely more than 5 hours. Easy treks are normally short covering 1 to five days.
A moderate trek will include some longer climbing or greater distances to be covered during the day. The trails may include some steep rocky stair cases or scrambling through close forests. These treks require a basic level of fitness and can also be suitable for families with children of aged people.
Moderate to Strenuous
A moderate to strenuous trek requires a medium level of fitness. During these treks you will be required to walk up to 6 hours in one day. The trails will not always be clear and may at times be narrow and steep. You will be at times quite high in altitude so should be prepared for colder conditions and occasional snow. Moderate to strenuous treks are normally in well facilitated areas but at times you should be prepared for minimal facilities and amenities, esp. if it is a camping trek. And you will be more isolated from major roads and towns.
A strenuous trek requires a high level of fitness and some basic mountain trekking experience will benefit you. You should expect the trails to be steep and narrow in some places. It may involve some scrambling over rocks or through tree roots. It will involve extended periods of uphill and downhill trekking. A strenuous graded trek usually means you will be trekking up to higher altitudes; therefore you should be prepared for walking in snow and extreme weather conditions. On some days you may be required to walk extended periods of time due to the remoteness of villages and suitable camping sites. Amenities and facilities will be less and you will be further away from main roads and towns.
This kind of trek is the hardest and requires a high level of fitness and some previous trekking experience. It will require you to trek at greater altitudes, sometimes above 5000m and there will be extended periods of climbing uphill. The trails will be steep and rocky and a small amount of climbing may be involved. Also you should expect to be walking in snow in some places and be prepared for extreme weather conditions. These kinds of treks are generally in remote areas with less facilities and amenities. You need to be thoroughly prepared and with experienced guides in these situations. Also in some places where you are required to cross passes you may be required to walk in excess of 8 hours per day.
- Trekking Equipment Checklist
Trekking equipment is necessary for all trekking routes in Nepal. It is important to have the right equipment with you or else you may run the risk of discomfort or may even have to shorten your trekking. Please find below a comprehensive list of trekking equipment. High quality trekking gear is difficult to get in Nepal, so if you are coming from abroad, don’t depend too much on local purchase. Following trekking equipments are just a checklist it is not necessary to bring everything that is listed below. Use your own experience and judgment to make your decision. - Altitude Sickness in the mountains
Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), altitude illness, hypobaropathy, or soroche, is a pathological effect of high altitude on humans, caused by acute exposure to low partial pressure of oxygen at high altitude. It commonly occurs above 2,400m. It presents as a collection of non specific symptoms, acquired at high altitude or in low air pressure, resembling a case of 'flu, carbon monoxide poisoning or a hangover. It is hard to determine who will be affected by altitude-sickness, as there are no specific factors that compare with this susceptibility to altitude sickness. However, most people can climb up to 2500m normally.
What causes it?
The body's muscles and organs need an adequate supply of oxygen to function properly. As altitude increases, the percentage of oxygen in the air remains constant but the pressure decreases, meaning we breathe in fewer oxygen molecules with each breath. This leaves the body short of its requirements and causes altitude sickness.
It's well known that mountaineers may be affected by altitude sickness, but anyone at high altitudes can experience symptoms. This includes people who fly to high-altitude destinations and those who go on walking and trekking trips.
What are the symptoms?
How severely someone is affected by altitude sickness depends on how high they go and how quickly they ascend. It's unusual for altitude sickness to occur below 2,400m.
When altitude sickness occurs because the body is not getting enough oxygen, mild symptoms may include:
For most people, symptoms start after about six hours of being at high altitude. As long as the person remains at the same altitude, the symptoms will usually disappear within one or two days.
Vomiting, chest pains and shortness of breath are signs that someone is affected more severely. These symptoms may take a day or two to appear.
Coughing up frothy sputum is a sign that fluid is collecting in the lungs, while clumsiness and difficulty walking can occur if the brain swells.
If severe cases of altitude sickness aren't treated, fits, confusion and coma may follow.
What's the treatment?
It's important not to ignore altitude sickness. If symptoms are mild, rest, fluids, a light diet and painkillers will enable the body to acclimatize. No further ascent should be attempted until all the symptoms have disappeared.
Descending to a lower altitude is often necessary when symptoms are more severe. If this fails to resolve symptoms, hospital treatment is needed. Any swelling of the brain will be treated with oxygen, rest and drugs.
Most people who are treated correctly for altitude sickness make a full recovery, usually within a few days. However, when the condition is more severe, treatment over a longer period may be necessary.
Can it be prevented?
Problems with altitude sickness can usually be avoided if care is taken to prepare properly. Climbers, in particular, are all too aware of the importance of:

Staged ascents that allow time to acclimatize
• Drinking plenty of liquid
• Being aware of the possibility and the symptoms of altitude sickness
• Not ignoring symptoms of altitude sickness if they occur
